AUTHORS

Dr. Durga Madhab Mahapatra 1, Dr. Soumendra Patra 2

ABSTRACT

PSBs are the dominant segment of India’s banking system, holding around 74% of all deposits. The performance of PSBs remains fragile compared to their peers in the private sector. The Govt. has vowed to recapitalize loss marking state-owned banks and also merge same of the weaker banks with sound ones. The five worst banks of terms of Gross NPAs (%) i.e. IDBI bank, (24.1%), IOB (23.6%), UCO Bank (19.9%), Bank of Maharashtra (18.6%) and Central Bank (18.2%) respectfully as on June 2017-18. Capital infusion in the state-run banks by the government is credit positive but lenders also need to improve efficiency and adopt better risk Management practices. Thus, the Government of India and RBI enthused by the success of State Bank of India (SBI) merger, the finance ministry is considering clearing another such proposal in the PSBs in this financial year with a grad to create 4-5 global sized lenders. Due to mounting NPAs, many banks are coming under PCA (Prompt Corrective action) and there are some restrictions for banks to open new brunches. This gaps will be filled up by the payment and small finance banks.
