TITLE

Strategies and Procedures for Risk Management in Professional Accounting Firms: An Empirical Study

AUTHORS

SUSAN BANE 1 & JOHN CURRIE 2

ABSTRACT

Formal approaches to risk management have potential to lead to more informed decision-making, for example, when a professional accounting firm is deciding whether or not to accept a potential client. This paper (which reports results of interviews with partners and senior staff in the "Big 4" professional accounting firms) presents evidence that these firms are taking an increasingly formal approach to risk management. Factors motivating this formalization are regulatory influences, the need to protect firms' reputations, and the effects of economic recession. Accounting firms' risk management strategies and procedures are focused on two main areas. The first area is the risk assessment ofpotential clients prior to acceptance. The second area is the design and implementation ofprescribed methods of working. To ensure that accounting firms' risk management strategies are implemented in practice, partners in these firms are held accountable for "implementation" (ensuring that prescribed risk management procedures are communicated to staff) and for "monitoring" (verifying that staff comply with the risk management procedures communicated to them).

Keywords: Risk management; strategies; professional accounting firms.

Position of Women in Contemporary Society and their Career Problems

AUTHOR

AMAL.K.SAHA1

ABSTRACT

In this study an attempt was made to investigate the position of women in Indian society and what are the problems they face in their career progression. The research findings suggest that significant numbers of Indian women are uneducated and not treated with dignity and respect like her counterpart. They are still traded, brutalized and neglected in the society at large. They are economically dependent on their father, husband and son in the course of their life. They are ignorant about their rights and are not allowed to take independent decisions. Indian women are family--oriented, and compromise their career with child bearing and family responsibilities. Even to-day most of the business organizations in India are not utilizing this untapped talent properly due to their conservativeness.

In India many big Indian corporations are engaged in some or the other kind of CSR activities. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is a term describing a company's obligation to be accountable to all of its stakeholders in all its operations and activities. This paper will be based on number of published case studies / examples of Corporate Social Responsibility. The paper traces various areas of responsibilities of business and the reasons for the same. The paper emphasizes that for practicing CSR there is a need for deep shift in corporate culture, values, decision making process and behaviour. Charity is not the driving force behind the move of Corporate Social Responsibility. It also does not explain the social moves taken by the corporations.
